Dedicated to Jo, born August 2, 1923, died September 8, 1988. Cancer took an incredible woman from us, and the family lost — well, if it could be said we were more than the sum of our parts, we lost that when she died*. China Grade was one of her favorite places, at least after moving to California. Her spirit can nearly always be felt there. It sort of depends on the transcendental state one brings to it, or finds in it. It's where we went to commune after her death. She donated her body to Stanford Medical School, and she wasn't the sort to expect a funeral, wake or other sort of organized mourning or honorarium. There's not even a marker, plaque or other memorial in her honor anywhere except, maybe, The Rock.
